The wish to follow the lessons of the Blue Zones emerged in the Netherlands since 2017. Jansen Maud
Several projects were launched and, among these, the following ones:
- The first urban Blue Zone of the Netherlands will be developed on 13.3 ha in Utrecht. The developers MECANOO have taken inspiration from the Blue Zones into four urban design themes: mobility, healthy diet, community and meaningfulness & relaxation.
- The Centre for Public Health in Economics and Business, the University Medical Centre both at the University Groningen and the Hanzehogeschool at the University of Applied Sciences in Groningen are cooperating within the project Healthy Aging Network Northern Netherlands (HANNN) with the ambition to create in 2030 the first ‘Man Made Blue Zone’ in Noord-Nederland with the aim to bring more healthy years of life to people, oud and young.
- The Vitaliteit Network proposes seminars and various activities to improve the quality of life at work in Dutch companies following the lessons of the Blue Zones considering that Dutch workers are becoming less vital. The number of chronic diseases is rising as well as the number of burn-outs and the level of absenteeism whereas future trends show that we have to continue working longer and harder than ever before.
- The Department of The Built Environment (Smart Architectural Technologies) at Technical University of Eindhoven is developing intelligent architecture for the construction of a neighbourhood for old people in Malvalaan (Aalst-Waalre) following the lessons of the Blue zones
