Concept and History

The Longevity Blues Zones are regions of the world where the population demonstrates an exceptional longevity and includes a significant proportion of centenarians. To date, there are five of them: Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Ikaria (Greece), to which Martinique (France) has recently been added.

The concept of Longevity Blue Zone initiated  in 2000 and scientifically revealed in 2004  is defined as a rather limited and homogenous geographical area where people share common life style and the same environment and their longevity has been scientifically proved to be exceptional.

This website is devoted to scientific investigations related to these longevity Blue Zones. It presents the scientific concept of Blue Zones and the context where it emerged. It gives some details on its genesis, the five Longevity Blue Zones identified so far,  the 7 ‘Blue Zones’ principles to live longer, some concrete examples of their implication in our post-modern societies, as well as the scientific research devoted to it.
