Michel Poulain was originally trained in astrophysics at the University of Liège (Belgium). He later received a PhD in demography from UCLouvain (Belgium). As a demographer, he specialized first in migration and thereafter in longevity studies. Currently an emeritus professor at UCLouvain and a Senior Researcher at the Estonian Institute for Population Studies at Tallinn University (Estonia), he has been the President of the Société Belge de Démographie (1984–1990) and later of the Association Internationale des Démographes de Langue Française (AIDELF) (1988–2000).
Involved in centenarian studies since 1992, he is an active member of the International Database on Longevity (IDL) and the International Centenarian Consortium (ICC). In 2000, he initiated the first Longevity Blue Zone in Sardinia as a rather limited and homogenous geographical area where people share a common lifestyle and the same environment, and their longevity has been scientifically proved to be exceptional.
This website is devoted to scientific research related to Longevity Blue Zones. It presents the scientific concept of Blue Zones and the context where it emerged as well as some concrete examples of their implication in our post-modern societies.
